Trace Engineering introduces LONWORKS Enabled Power Inverters
at CEDIA EXPO
Trace SW Series Inverters Now Communicate with Networked Home
Automation and Control Systems
Indianapolis September 24, 1999. As home automation and
control are gaining momentum, so too are the home and small
building backup power systems that keep everything running.
During CEDIA EXPO '99 in booth number 1323, Trace Engineering
will discuss how building automation networks, using LONWORKS
technology, can provide system designers the ability increase
reliability by integrating backup power systems into their
overall control systems.
Trace backup systems automatically provide instant backup
electricity from a battery bank when power from the utility
unexpectedly shuts down. When connected to a generator, solar
panels or other renewable energy sources, these systems can
provide power during extended blackouts caused by extreme
weather or the utility distribution problems that have become
increasingly common as demand surges. Trace backup systems
greatly simplify the task of determining the appropriate
solution for a given installation while providing
state-of-the-art protection in residential or office settings.
A Trace SW Series / LONWORKS interface developed by Surf
Networks enables communication with a distributed control
architecture and gives system designers and users alike total
control over all system parameters.
"More and more users of electricity are finding that a backup
electric system is the ideal defence against unpredictable
power. From a small 500-watt unit that can run a computer,
lights and fax, to a 30KW installation used to power a bank in
Latin America; we have seen an incredible growth in demand for
these systems," according to Trace Vice President for Sales
and Marketing Sam Vanderhoof. "And now with the ability to
interface with building automation and control systems using
LONWORKS technology, Trace backup power systems can integrate
seamlessly with small building or home automation system.
To communicate with the LONWORKS systems, Trace SW Series
inverters require only a simple connection to an Amerilon
Trace SW Series / LONWORKS interface device produced by Surf
Networks. The wide availability of control components using
LONWORKS technology, and the features inherent in these
devices allow a system designer total flexibility and a very
large feature set.
Trace systems are based on power inverters that takes AC
electricity from the grid when power is on and rectify it to
DC power to charge a battery bank. Then when grid power goes
out, the inverter immediately takes stored energy from the
battery bank and "inverts" it to AC power to run anything from
office electronics to home appliances. The amount of
continuous power required determines the size of the inverter
needed. The amount of time power is out determines the amount
of batteries needed. In areas where lengthy or frequent power
outages are anticipated, the systems can also be recharged
with conventional generators or by renewable energy sources
such as solar panels, wind, or micro-hydro for a virtually
unlimited supply of clean power.
Trace backup electric systems come in a wide range of sizes to
meet every power requirement and budget. All models feature
instantaneous protection from blackouts, silent operation, UL
and/or ETL Listing, and Y2K compliance. The LONWORKS enabled
inverters include the company premium SW Series ideal for
larger, full-featured systems and generator integration, as
well as the new lower cost PS Series systems designed for
smaller non-generator installations. When coupled with a
renewable power source, the SW Series can even sell excess
power back to the utility (where permitted), saving energy and
reducing utility bills as well as providing backup power.
These are the only battery backup inverters on the market
approved for utility sellback.
Trace Backup Electric Systems are available now from select
Trace distributors.

embarking on a tour of remote locations in Developing
countries of AFRICA, CARIBBEANS AND SOUTH - AMERICA.
The purpose is to get a first hand feel of the electrical
problems encountered by this countries.
Our research would cover mostly the villages and remote
locations , which are worst hit by the problem of sustainable
and reliable power supply.
The need and benefits of alternative energy would be a point
of emphasis and market analysis in respect to customer's
demand would be considered in the course of our trip.
We shall also have full representation at this years SOLAR
2000, taking place in Madison, Wisconsin.
SOLAR Conference 2000, is expected to bring together solar
engineers, companies, government parastatals, students and the
private individual, to discuss matters on solar technology.
The conference would allow dealers, distributors and users of
solar technology to see new invention and technology in the
market.
OMNI-Solar would provide full representation.
